2 Samuel 9:1 And David said, “Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” The back drop to this question is the covenant that David had with Jonathan years before. They had such an intimate, meaningful relationship. It was phileo love in the truest sense.
This reminds me of the fact that sticking to a covenant is paramount. Its what makes or breaks the relationship. If the one party is committed to the covenant but the other party is not then the covenant is null and void.
Saul’s family line had been wiped out in the war, or so everyone thought. But he had a grandson, Jonathan’s son, Jonathan who was David’s best buddy. And for that sake David wanted to keep a covenant that was made years ago.
My dream and desire is that such covenant is cherished in a day like today. I wonder though if we still value covenants as much as the times of David were viewed.
